The No. 1 ranked Cal men's varsity eight defeated No. 8 Oregon State by a length of open water in dual racing at the Stanford Invitiational on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, April 20. With the win over the Beavers, the Cal varsity eight remains undefeated on the year.
The Bears took a two-second advantage in the first 500 meters of the race and extended the margin to a full length as the crews reached the midway point on the race course. Cal broke the race open in the third 500 moving out to a half-length of open water advantage by the 1500.
"Oregon State is consistantly improving as a program and we knew we needed to race well against them today," said senior Jake Wetzel. "We're on track and weekends like this with good competition are really important in the long run."
In the men's JV event, Cal came out of the blocks quickly and took a six seat lead in the first 500 meters before breaking the race wide open by the 1000. The Bears went on to win by more than 10 seconds.
The Cal freshman eight completed a sweep of the Beavers with its winning performance. The Bears had a three-seat advantage at 500 meters and Cal coxswain Matthew Renner had the OSU bowball by the 1000, but the Beavers would not give and fought back in the second half of the race. Cal gave back a seat or two, but went on to win by nearly a length.
Cal men's Varsity and JV crews face the University of Wisconsin at Redwood Shores, April 21. The men's varsity race is the first race of the day slated for 9:00 a.m. The JV eight is scheduled for 9:20 a.m.
