BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California women's tennis team got back on track today, upsetting the visiting USC Trojans by a score of 4-3 at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley today. With the win, the Bears improve to 11-6, while the Trojans are swept out of the Bay Area, record falling to 14-6 on the year.
As it turned out, everything came down to the doubles point, and USC got things started early there. Things looked bleak for Cal as Catherine Lynch and Carla Arguelles were down 1-4, while Raquel Kops-Jones and Jody Scheldt were down 1-6. However, the Bears turned themselves, and perhaps their season, around in a furious comeback. While Kops-Jones and Scheldt could not make it all the way back, Lynch and Arguelles only lost one more game to win the pro-set, 8-5. Coupled with Christina Fusano and Jieun Jacobs' win on court two, the Bears were rolling.
Cal officially had the match in the bag before USC scored their second point. Scheldt transferred her momentum to the fourth court, blowing Anita Loyola off the pavement, 6-1, 6-2. Fusano took an early lead in her match on court three before finishing off Maureen Diaz, 6-1, 6-3. After Kops-Jones' loss on the top court, the attention turned to court two, where Lynch controlled Luana Magnani, oftentimes frustrating the Trojan, before dominating her in the second set, winning 7-5, 6-1.
The Bears remain at Hellman next week, challenging the Arizona schools on Friday (1:30 p.m.) and Saturday (noon).
