BEARS TRAVEL TO BYU INVITE: The California women's golf team looks for an encore of its record-breaking performance last week as it competes in the BYU Invitational today and tomorrow. The 54-hole, par 72 tournament takes place on the Hobble Creek Golf Course (yardage: 5,920) in Springville, Utah. Teams play 36 holes today and 18 tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. MT shotgun start both days.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: The complete 14-team field includes: Boise State, Brigham Young, Cal, Colorado, Idaho, Idaho State, Mesa State, Montana, Montana State, Pepperdine, Portland, San Francisco, UTEP and Weber State.
LAST YEAR AT THIS EVENT: Cal did not compete at the 1997 BYU Invitational as Oregon State took top honors with a 54-hole total 908, 14 shots ahead of host BYU. In the Golden Bears brief four-year history, the only other time they competed in this meet was in 1996 when they finished third out of 18 teams with a 36-hole total 649.
RECORDS FALL AT RAM FALL CLASSIC: Cal opened its fall season with its best tournament in school history. The Bears posted a 906 to finish in second place, 17 shots behind Pepperdine (889). The second-place finish marked Cal's highest finish at a major tournament as it took top honors at the three-team Blue Rock Springs Invitational last season. Individually, Pepperdine's Lisa Chang claimed the title with a 217 (70-74-73), one shot better than her teammate Jenny Glasgow and Colorado State's Michelle Thomas. Redshirt freshman Ann Walker (Strathaven, Scotland) led the Bears tying for seventh with a 224 (70-79-75), a new Cal standard for 18 and 54 holes. Recap of records:

HEAD COACH NANCY McDANIEL: Nancy McDaniel is in her fourth season as head coach of the Bears. One of the most successful golfers ever to compete at the University of Washington, McDaniel served as team captain as a senior and earned one All-America and two Pac-10 All-Star team selections. A 1988 graduate of the Washington with a degree in public relations, McDaniel is a former professional player on the European, Ladies Asian and Players West Golf Tours.
COACH McDANIEL ON RECORD MEET: "This is a much more experienced Cal team and our sights are set higher this season. Ann Walker (redshirt in '97-'98) has raised the bar for excellence and the others have followed."
