Sept. 12, 2011
(ANN ARBOR) - Cal and Joël Stalter opened the 2011-12 season with strong play on Monday as both are in the lead after the completion of 36 of 54 scheduled holes at the Wolverine Intercollegiate on Monday.
The Golden Bears sit at 12-under par (281-275 - 556, -12) and hold a five-stroke advantage over second-place Michigan State (285-276 - 561, -7) after shooting the best score in both the first and the second round.
"It's certainly nice to have a five-shot lead after the first two rounds," head coach Steve Desimone said. "It's nice but not substantial. Still, I would rather be there than five shots down. I like our chances tomorrow. Let's go play and see if we can come home with an early season victory. That would be a great way to start the season."
Stalter (72-63 - 135, -7) charged into the lead with a collegiate career-best and course record-tying eight-under par 63 in a second round that included an eagle, seven birdies and one bogey. He had three birdies and four bogeys in his opening-round one-over par 72.
"Joël Stalter's round was very impressive," Cal head coach Steve Desimone said. "He did so many things right. He hit it about as well as you can hit and didn't even have to make a lot of [long] putts."
Michigan State's Dan Ellis (70-66 - 136, -6) is only one shot behind Stalter, while Cal freshman Michael Kim (68-69 - 137, -5) is tied for third and was the only golfer to fire back-to-back rounds under 70 on Monday.
Kim's five under came with nine birdies to offset four bogeys.
"Michael Kim had a very strong first day," Desimone said. "He's a wonderful player ... he really manages his game beautifully."
Homa matched the nine birdies posted by Kim but also had eight bogeys.
Hagy's one-under par first round came on two birdies, 15 pars and one bogey. He was much more up and down in the second round with four birdies and eight bogeys. Johnson's day included six birdies and nine bogeys.
"It was a solid first day to open the season," Desimone said. "I was really pleased with the guys. But there were no surprises, because our guys were playing very well heading into the first tournament."
The two-day event being played at the 6,687-yard, par-71 U-M Golf Course is scheduled to conclude with the third and final round on Tuesday. Action is slated to begin at 8 a.m. ET/5:00 a.m. PT. Johnson will be first Cal golfer off the tee at 8:45 a.m. ET/5:45 a.m. PT.
