Berkeley, Calif. - The University of California women's swimming team (1-0) finished second at the Southern Methodist Classic Saturday at Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, Texas. Host SMU won the classic with 347 points, while the Golden Bears were runner-up with 310.5 points.
Junior Natalie Coughlin earned the High Point Swimmer Award after breaking three meet records and two pool records over the weekend. On Saturday, Coughlin's victories came in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.38) and 200 butterfly (1:56.44). She also helped Cal's 400 freestyle relay team to second-place finish (3:25.57).
Freshman Ashley Chandler finished second in the 500 free (4:51.58) and senior Staciana Stitts notched a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.11). Cal's 200 free relay team of junior Danielle Becks, seniors Michelle Harper and Micha Burden and Stitts placed third (1:35.79).
Cal is next in action Nov. 1, when the Bears visit the three-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs.
