ROSEVILLE, CALIF. - The California men's swimming team had several strong performances during the first day of the TYR Pacific Invitational, held at the Roseville Aquatic Center in Roseville, Calif., winning six of seven races and leading Pacific, 604.50 to 390.50.
The Golden Bears captured the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relays and had three different individuals win races. Senior Jernej Godec swam the backstroke leg of Cal's victorious 200 medley relay (1:32.80), which also included senior Richard Hunter (breaststroke), senior Dominic Cathey (butterfly) and sophomore Alex Cushing (freestyle). Godec went on to win the 50 free with a time of 20.97.
Other Bear winners included senior standout Dominik Meichtry, who won the 200 free with a time of 1:41.44; sophomore Aaron Casey, who placed first in 1,650 free with a time of 16:05.57; and freshman Damir Dugonjic, a native of Raven na Koroskem, Slovenia, who won the 100 breast in a time of 57.51.
In the final relay race of the day, Cal won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:08.20, paced by senior Mark Eckart (22.73), senior Joe Whittington (21.80), freshman Martti Aljand (22.45) and senior Eric Dunipace (22.58).
Cal will return to the TYR Pacific Invitational Saturday, competing against athletes from both Pacific and UC Davis.
