STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked California men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season in its final dual meet of the season, falling to fifth-ranked Stanford, 136-107, in the Big Meet on a cold Saturday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Golden Bears won just four out of 13 events and wound up with a 6-1 (3-1 Pac-10) dual-meet record, while Stanford improved to 4-1 (4-1 Pac-10).
Cal won two individual swim events: Senior Henrique Barbosa won the 200-yard breaststroke in an automatic NCAA qualifying and season-best time of 1:56.40. Junior teammate Patrick O'Neil won the 200 butterfly in an NCAA provisional qualifying and Cal season-best time of 1:45.40. Bears freshman diver Sam Helvie won the one-meter springboard with a score of 216.00 points and the Cal A team of sophomore William Copeland, senior Milorad Cavic, sophomore Jernej Godec and junior Jonas Tilly won the 400-freestyle relay in an automatic NCAA qualifying, Avery Aquatic Center record and Cal season-best time of 2:53.68.
Stanford's Ben Wildman-Tobriner and Shaun Philips were the only competitors to win two events today. Wildman Tobriner won both the 50 (19.71) and 100 (43.69) frees, while Philips won the 500 (pool-record 4:19.26) and 1000 (school- and pool-record 8:50.93) frees. The Cardinal now has a 94-14 advantage in the all-time series with Cal, which won last season's dual meet between the two rivals, 129-114, on Feb. 19, 2005, in Berkeley.
The Cal divers next compete at the Pac-10 Championships Feb. 23-25 in Federal Way, Wash. The Cal swimmers gear up for their Pac-10 Championships March 1-4 also in Federal Way.
