BERKELEY - Freshman Gina Leomiti hit a home run, and senior Kristina Thorson pitched a solid game as the No. 7 California softball team defeated No. 6 Oregon State, 2-0, at Levine-Fricke Field Saturday.
Early in the game, the Beavers (29-5, 2-3 Pac-10) threatened at the plate, but the momentum swung in favor of the Bears (34-4, 3-1) in the third inning.
Thorson entered the game in the third inning - in relief of freshman Lauren Frankiewicz - with a runner on first and second. Oregon State's Mia Longfellow singled to load the bases. Thorson then struck out the Beavers' next three batters, including two looking.
Leomiti led off the bottom of the third with a home run to right center, putting the Bears ahead 1-0.
Cal scored again in the fifth inning when junior Alex Sutton hit an RBI single to drive in freshman Morgan Siegel, who had reached base on a single. Siegel had advanced to second and third after senior Haley Woods and senior Emily Friedman both walked.
The Beavers never seriously threatened again, as Thorson struck out three batters in the sixth, and struck out two batters in the seventh, getting the third out on a fly ball to right field.
Cal hosts the Beavers again Sunday at 1 p.m.
