PALO ALTO - The No. 5 California softball team lost two tough games in a doubleheader at No. 6/7 Stanford, Saturday. The Cardinal won the first game 2-1 in nine innings and the second 4-2. The Golden Bears fall to 36-6 overall and 5-3 in Pac-10 play. Stanford improves to 30-8 and 4-4.
Stanford tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning, and the Cardinal put two more runs on the board in the third inning when Erin Howe hit a two-run single. Stanford capped its scoring in the fifth on an RBI single from Anna Beardman.
Friedman's solo home run in the sixth inning brought the score to 4-2. And the Bears weren't done. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Cal staged a final comeback attempt. Freshman Gina Leomiti (Stanford error), Siegel (walk) and senior Lindsay James (single) all reached base. But the Bears were unable to convert, as a ground out from senior Haley Woods ended the game.
In Game 1, the score stood at 0-0 through five innings. Cal took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning when sophomore Katie Vickers hit an RBI double to right field, sending Friedman home. Friedman knocked a single up the middle to reach base.
Stanford tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Catalina Morris. The Cardinal ended the game on an RBI single by Beardman in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior Kristina Thorson (26-4) threw a solid game for the Bears in Game 1, going 8.1 innings. She struck out 10 batters in the game and suffered just her fourth loss of the season.
The Bears travel to Santa Clara Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Broncos. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Cal then hosts Arizona State and Arizona next weekend. The Bears host Arizona State Friday at 3 p.m. Arizona visits Berkeley for a two-game series, playing Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
