BERKELEY - Cal senior Raquel Kops-Jones is the No. 1-ranked women's player in college tennis -- again. On the heels of winning the first women's Pac-10 singles championship in Golden Bear history, Kops-Jones moves back into the nation's top spot in the latest rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Kops-Jones, who has been ranked among the top five players in the nation since ending last season ranked No. 5, climbed to No. 1 in the rankings on Mar. 9 this year and remained in the top spot for nearly a month before falling to No. 4 on Apr. 6. In the latest rankings released Tuesday, she moves back into the No. 1 spot after blasting through the competition at the 2004 Pac-10 Individual Championships, recording five consecutive straight-set victories and taking home the first women's Pac-10 singles title in Cal history. Kops-Jones' overall singles record this season now stands at an impressive 27-6.
Cal fans will have the opportunity to watch Kops-Jones in action this week when Fox Sports Net Bay Area televises her singles title victory in the 2004 Pac-10 Individual Championships. The men's and women's championship title games will be aired from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. this Friday, April 30, and again on Saturday, May 1, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
