Berkeley - Reserve quarterback Sam Clemons has announced his transfer to Division I-AA Western Illinois and will begin classes at that school next Monday, January 10.
Clemons, who will be a junior next fall, made the decision to transfer after failing to win the starting job at Cal last season, with freshman Kyle Boller getting the call. He asked for, and was granted, his release by head coach Tom Holmoe the week after the conclusion of the 1999 season in November.
The announcement of his transfer came as no surprise to Holmoe. "This is something we pretty much knew was going to happen for the past two months," said the Cal head coach. "We would have liked Sam to have stayed and compete for playing time, but he felt it was in his best interest to transfer."
Cal will be short-handed at the quarterback position during the spring drills in April, but Holmoe said he expected starter Kyle Boller to be ready to participate in those spring practices after rehabilitating a shoulder injury in the next few months. Cal will also utilize freshman Kevin Klein and plans to add at least one junior college quarterback transfer in time for the upcoming semester.
