California Golden Bears Finish 10th at Wildcat Invitational

PUERTO PENASCO, SONORA, MEXICO -

The California Golden Bears women's golf team finished in a tie for tenth place at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational held at the Peninsula Golf Course, a 6,146 yard par 72 Nicklaus designed course in the coastal resort town of Puerto Penasco in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Sophomore Pia Halbig led the Bears, finishing seventh among individuals.

The Golden Bears, having to play catch up in the tournament after posting an opening round score of 312, followed up Monday's team score of 299 with a 300 on Tuesday. The Bears moved up from 11th place to finish in a tie for tenth with New Mexico. The Lobos, lead by the individual co-medalist Jodi Ewart's final round one-under, caught the Bears, tying them for tenth place with a 911 (+47). Both teams passed the University of Denver, who fell to 12th place, two strokes behind the Bears and Lobos. The Green Wave of Tulane was one stroke up, finishing in ninth with a 910. The Tennessee Volunteers were eighth with a 909.

UCLA posted the low team score of the day, a 287, to earn the team title with an overall score of 869, nine strokes up on the second-place Arizona State Sun Devils and USC Trojans.

Seniors Shannon Yocum and Allison Goodman posted the low third-round score for the Bears, both shooting a one-over 73. Goodman ended the tournament in a tie for 14th place at +4. Yocum, who bounced back from a six-over first round by going two over Monday and then +1 Tuesday, finished in 25th place with a +9. Sophomore Pia Halbig entered the final round tied for the individual lead. She shot a +3 on her final 18 holes to close out the tournament one stroke over par with a 217. Freshman Angie Villela was the final scoring Bear, turning in a scorecard of 92-78-79 (249).

USC's Lizette Salas and New Mexico's Jodi Ewart tied for medalist honors with identical three-under 213's. Ewart was the only player in the field to shoot under par all three rounds.

The Bears are back in action next week much closer to home. They will head to San Jose to play in the 2009 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Country Club Mar. 2-3. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 on Tuesday.
