SEATTLE, WASH. -
Three California Golden Bear gymnasts competed at the NCAA West Regional in Seattle Saturday night, April 4, 2009, at the Bank of America center.
Junior Sophia Hocini finished tenth in the all-around. Hocini, who was second team All-Pac-10 in the all-around this season, earned a combined score of 38.750 to finish in a tie for tenth place in the standings. Hocini scored a 9.750 on the vault, 9.650 on the bars, 9.575 on the beam, and 9.775 on the floor.
This was the second time in Hocini's career that she placed in the top-10 in the all-around of the NCAA West Regional. Last season, she finished in ninth place with a then-career high mark of 38.700.
The Bears also had two gymnasts competing in individual events. Senior Bridgette Glass earned a 9.650 on the bars, tying with Hocini for 35th place. Sophomore Avery Gee rated a 9.750 on the floor to finish 27th.
This was Glass' third and final trip to the Regionals in her Cal career. The senior's final trip to Regionals was her first time competing on the bars. In each of the last two seasons, Glass was a competitor on the beam. She scored a 9.825 on her 2008 beam routine to finish in 11th place. She scored a 9.750 at the 2007 Regional.
Gee was competing for the first time at the NCAA Regionals. Gee's 9.750 was an improvement over the 9.725 she scored on her floor routine at the Pac-10 Championships. As a sophomore this season, Gee tied for the highest floor mark by a Bear, earning a 9.850 twice, once against Washington and once at Stanford. After a slow start to the season, she consistently scored 9.700 or better in each of her last dozen floor performances.
Hocini and Gee will return to the Bears in 2010 to anchor a young squad that will see the influx of six rookie freshman next season.
