BERKELEY - Cal finished its third week of spring football workouts Saturday on a warm and sunny afternoon at Witter Rugby Field. There were many highlights on both sides of the ball during an extended team session that capped the spirited practice and a weekend of activities that included the annual two-day Cal Football Coaches Clinic.
"There were a lot of great things," an enthusiastic head coach Jeff Tedford told reporter during post-practice interviews. "Some guys made some plays, everybody was really physical running to the ball, and for the most part we took good care of the ball. I thought there was a lot of really good effort, a lot of excitement."
Much of the excitement on offense was caused by the play of quarterback Zach Maynard, who ran for three touchdowns during the team session. Maynard carried the ball six times for 39 yards and also completed 6-of-10 passes for 69 yards.
"I'm a lot more comfortable now and have a lot more patience," Maynard said when asked about his strong performance on the ground. "When I see the lanes develop, I can take them when I need to. With a whole year of experience you start to develop that comfort level."
Wide receivers Bryce McGovern (three receptions) and Jackson Bouza (two receptions) led the way with 41 receiving yards each, with 34 of Bouza's coming when he and Allan Bridgford hooked up for a 34-yard touchdown that Bouza pulled down in the corner of the end zone.
Tailback Brendan Bigelow had the biggest day for a running back, carrying the ball eight times for 41 yards. Fellow tailback Dasarte Yarnway also contributed 16 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Linebacker Jason Gibson highlighted the Bears' defensive efforts with a team-high six tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and also had a pass breakup. Defensive back Tyré Ellison added four tackles and an interception, while defensive lineman Austin Clark had three tackles including 2.0 TFL. Linebackers Lucas King, Ted Agu and Nathan Broussard (-3 yards), and defensive lineman Viliami Moala each had 1.0 sack.
Placekicker Vincenzo D'Amato also had a strong day, making each of his eight attempts with four PAT's and four field goals from 27, 32, 38 and 41 yards.
After the post-practice interview sessions, Tedford personally handed out gifts of chocolate Easter bunnies for the media covering the team and later tweeted "Great 2 have all visiting coaches here 4 our clinic! Physical fun practice today! Chocolate bunnies 4 everyone - Happy Easter!"
Cal will continue spring practice through Saturday, April 21, when fans of all ages are invited to join the Cal Family in experiencing Cal Spring Football that day. The free event is part of Cal Day festivities on campus and will take place at Edwards Stadium located adjacent to the corner of Fulton Street and Bancroft Way in Berkeley. Gates open at 10 a.m., with the team's workout slated to begin at 11 a.m. Visit CalBears.com for additional details.
"It's going to be a great event," Tedford said. "There will be a lot of fan interaction. We'll have some of our NFL players back because that night there's a gala going on. It should be an exciting day."
