FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE, Japan - California extended its lead to 15 strokes Wednesday after the second round of The Top Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship at Tanagura Country Club. The Golden Bears carded a 293 today and are at plus-17 593 heading into tomorrow's final round.
South Carolina, the only other U.S. team in the women's portion of the tournament, is second at 608 following Wednesday's round of 301. Tohoku Fukushi is third at 611, followed by Nagoya University of Commerce at 620 and Nippon Sport Science University at 623.
Cal senior Sarah Huarte fired a 73 in the second round and continues to lead the individual race by one shot at even-par 144. C. Tsunekawa, who is playing as an individual from Doshisha University, is tied for second with T. Kanai of Tohoku Fukushi at 145. Tsunekawa shot a 69 for the low round of the day.
Also in the top 10 for the Bears are senior Anna Temple (4th, 149), sophomore Sophia Sheridan (T6th, 150) and senior Claire Dury (T8th, 151). Dury rebounded from yesterday's score of 80 to pace Cal with a 71 today. Temple shot an even-par 72, while Sheridan carded a 77. Sophomore Sofie Andersson had a tough day on the links with an 80 and finds herself tied for 23rd at 159.
Thursday's final round of the 54-hole tournament tees off at 7 a.m. local time (10 hours ahead of California).
