HEAD COACH NORT THORNTON: Nort Thornton, the 1999 Pacific-10 Coach of the Year, is in his 27th season as Cal's head men's swim coach. Thornton, the dean of the Pac-10 swimming coaches, has a career dual meet record of 190-76 (.714) with the Golden Bears and his squad finished fifth in the nation at the 2000 NCAA Championship. Thornton led Cal to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1979 and 1980.

BEAR NOTES: The California men's swim team (1-0), which finished fifth in the nation last season, started off the 2000-01 season with some strong performances at the two-day USC Invitational Oct. 20-21 at the McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Bears sent a squad of eight swimmers - senior Scott Greenwood, junior Maciej Burny, junior Frank Uxa, sophomore Joe Bruckhart, sophomore Quentin Byma and freshmen Fabian Friedrich, Jeff Natalizio and Keith Vogelgesang, to the meet. In the second day of the competition, the Bears captured the 200 medley relay (1:33.38 Natalizio, Byma, Friedrich, Greenwood) and the 400 free relay (3:01.94 Uxa, Bruckart, Burny, Greenwood), while individually Friedrich placed second in the 100 fly (50.05), Natalizio was second in the 100 back (51.86) and Burny was third in the 200 free (1:42.00). In the first day of the USC Invite, Cal won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:21.87 (Uxa, Bruckart, Burny, Greenwood). Greenwood, who transferred from USC to Cal in 1998, placed second in the 50 free (21.10), while Uxa placed third (21.11) and Burny placed fifth (21.33) in the 50 free. The Bears also placed second in the 400 medley relay (3:25.56 Natalizio, Byma, Friedrich, Greenwood). In Cal's last meet, a 120-104 victory at Pacific Oct. 27, the Bears won 12 of 14 events. Double winners for Cal included senior captain Greenwood winning the 50 (20.78) and 100 free (46.02) and junior captain George Wilkinson winning the 500 (4:37.25) and 1000 free (9:26.75). Other winners for the Bears included sophomore Daniel Kim in the 100 breast (55.91), junior Hiro Sakoda in the 200 fly (1:53.65), junior Matt Macedo in the 200 back (1:52.22), junior Andrew Chan in the 200 breast (2:04.69), Friedrich in the 100 fly (51.57) and sophomore Joe Bruckart in the 200 IM (1:54.45). Cal also captured the 200 medley relay (1:32.43) and 200 free relay (1:24.15).

NOTING THE OPPONENT: Cal has a 10-0 all-time record against CS Bakersfield, defeating the Roadrunners last season, 111-68, Nov. 5 at Spieker Aquatic Complex. CS Bakersfield is the defending national NCAA Division II champion, and has won the Division II title two of the last three years and 10 of the last 14 years. Last year, the Roadrunners were 5-1 in dual meets, with their only loss coming against the Bears. CS Bakersfield returns 2000 NCAA Division II champions - sophomore Vlastimil Burda (distance free, back), junior Armin Hummel (distance free, IM), senior Derek Guffey (back, IM) and senior Jaime Cuevas (fly).
