No. 6/7 Cal Improves to 21-2 With Win Over Columbia

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Kristina Thorson improved to 14-2 as the No. 6/7 California softball team defeated Columbia, 3-1, in the first day of the rainy Capital Classic. Thorson struck out 11 of the 26 batters she faced in seven innings of play for the Golden Bears (21-2).

Cal put one run on the board in the first inning and two more in the fourth. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first when freshman Morgan Siegel scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Carly Winger.

In the fourth, senior Emily Friedman scored after junior Alex Sutton doubled down the right field line. Friedman advanced to third on the double and scored on a fielding error by the Lions. Sutton scored Cal's final run on a single from sophomore Chloe Kloezeman.

The Bears continue tournament play Saturday, with games against Illinois at 10 a.m. and Iowa at 3 p.m.
