STANFORD, CALIF. - The No. 11-ranked California men's swimming and diving team fell to No. 3-ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford, 132.5-110.5, Saturday at the Avery Aquatics Complex on the Stanford campus. The Golden Bears, whose dual meet record slipped to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10, were led by junior diver Sam Helvie, who captured both the one-meter and three-meter boards. Cal also had a pair of individual winners - freshman Daniel Smith in the 500 free and sophomore Sean Mahoney in the 200 breast. The Bears placed first in the meet's final event as well with a time of 2:59.29 in the 400 free relay (seniors William Copeland, Jernej Godec, Joe Whittington, Eric Dunipace).
Helvie, who continues to shine and will next compete in the Pac-10 Diving Championships Feb. 28-Mar. 1 in Federal Way, Wash., won the one-meter board with a score of 313.05. Cal freshman Thomas Henninger placed second on the one-meter competition with a score of 307.58. Helvie then notched the three-meter board with a mark of 356.70.
Freshman Smith, from Sacramento, won the 500 free with a time of 4:32.12, while Mahoney, a sophomore transfer from West Virginia who grew up in Rio Vista, Calif., placed first the 200 breast with a time of 1:58.39.
The Bear swimmers will next compete at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, Mar. 5-8 at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif.
