BERKELEY - The University of California men's soccer team hosts the second-annual Cal-Adidas Classic, Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1, at Memorial Stadium, home to Bears football.
The tournament features Cal, No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 St. John's and Rider, bringing together teams from the MPSF, the Big East and the MAAC conferences. Games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday. See the schedule below for complete details.
Cal, who plays one of the toughest schedules in the country, enters this weekend's action with a 5-7-0 mark. The Bears are led by junior striker John Macdonald and sophomore striker Kendall Simmonds, who are tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points. The Stanford Cardinal, 10-3-0, features the fourth-best goalkeeper in the country in sophomore Adam Zapala (0.46 GAA). The St. John's Red Storm, the 1996 NCAA champion, are 8-3-3 in 1998 and are led by junior striker Pablo Budna, who has 20 points (8G, 4A). Rider Bronc boasts an 8-6 mark and is paced by senior striker Craig Wicken's 29 points (12G, 5A).
No. 1 Indiana claimed the inaugural 1997 Cal-adidas tournament by defeating Cal in the championship game, 3-1. Stanford and San Francisco were the other participants.
