BERKELEY, Calif. - California wasted no time in jumping out to an early 4-0 lead over visiting Santa Clara Saturday afternoon, winning the Western Women's Lacrosse League contest 12-2 before 271 fans in Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore Sarah Wheatley and Freshman Halsey Monger each scored four goals in the contest for the Bears. Senior Alyssa Johl added a pair while junior Kelly Thompson and freshman Laura Kado each tallied one.
Just 12 seconds into the game, Wheatley threw in the first California (9-9, 5-2 in the WWLL) goal, followed by two goals from Monger and one from Johl, all within the first 11 minutes, propping up a 4-0 Cal lead. Erin Meyer answered for Santa Clara (1-5 in the WWLL) with the Broncos' first goal with 18:44 remaining in the first half.
"We needed to be executing off of the set offense," said California head coach Jill Malko, "and we were able to accomplish that today. We have also been emphasizing on playing up to our highest level, despite what our opponent shows us, and I think we were able to do that today."
With a 5-1 lead coming out of halftime, Wheatley struck early yet again, notching her second goal of the day a mere 29 seconds into the second period before feeding the ball over to Johl for an assist and Johl's second goal of the day 1:31 later, pushing the Cal lead up to 7-1. Monger put the finishing touches on the match with a final goal of her own with 16:10 remaining in the game, setting the score at 12-2.
"Defensively, we did a really good job pressing through the midfield," said Malko. "We completely dominated the draws and loose balls. It was nice to have everyone contribute at such a high level. It's important to get those quality minutes."
The Bears return to action Saturday and Sunday, April 24th and 25th, when they host UC Davis and Pacific in Memorial Stadium. Both games are set to start at 1:00 p.m.
