SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The No. 2-ranked Cal men's water polo team, led by senior Ivan Rackov's five goals, concluded a successful trip to southern California with an 18-8 victory over No. 9 UC San Diego Sunday (Oct. 9) in a non-league match in San Diego. The Golden Bears had defeated No. 3 UCLA, 8-5, Friday night and Long Beach State, 14-6, Saturday, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches to improve to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play.
Cal will finally be returning home for a huge match versus USC on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex in a rematch of last year's NCAA title match in which the Trojans upended the Bears, 12-10, in overtime at Cal. This season, the Bears have played their last 14 matches on the road since hosting UC Davis and Santa Clara on Sept. 3.
Against the Tritons Sunday, Cal jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and was never threatened after that, scoring two goals in the second period and five goals in both the third and fourth periods. Senior Luka Saponjic added three goals, while sophomores Collin Smith and Hunter Gettlefinger, and freshman Aleksa Saponjic, had two goals apiece.
