TUCSON, Ariz. - True to form, the 22nd-ranked California men's golf team rebounded from a dreadful first round to fire the best combined score of the day during the second round at the 1999 NCAA West Regional Friday, as the Golden Bears catapulted from tied for 13th all the way to fifth with a 4-under-par 284. Cal, which did not have a single player break par during the opening round of play at Tucson National, had three golfers turn the trick Friday and heads into Saturday's final round at 9-over 585.

"We started well today and never let up," said Cal head coach Steve Desimone. "Unlike yesterday, we finished very strong today. But we have to do it all over again tomorrow."

Arizona State carded an even-par 288 to remain atop the team leader board at 5-under 571 after 36 holes. UNLV and Brigham Young are tied for second at 1-over 577, with Oregon in fourth at 582.

Junior Dong Yi (Alameda) led the Bears resurgence, carding a 2-under 70 to climb from tied for 14th to tied for 5th among individuals at 2-under 142. Senior Dan Coyle (Dundalk, Ire.) and junior Robert Hamilton (Sacramento) also broke par during Friday's second round, with Coyle's 69 moving him all the way from tied for 53rd to tied for 15th at 1-over 145. Hamilton, who was also tied for 53rd after round one, finished up tied for 20th at 3-over 147.

Two Golden Bears continued their struggles during the second round, however, as senior Dan Arroyo (Walnut Creek) could only muster a 3-over 75 and junior Han Lee (Cerritos) a 2-over 74. Arroyo and Lee are tied for 57th and 67th, respectively.

"I like our position," Desimone admitted. "We hit some of the best shots we've hit all year and many were right into the teeth of the wind. Heading into tomorrow we'll be looking ahead instead of behind us. I think we an catch some of the teams in front of us, but the bottom line is that with another solid round I think well be headed for Minnesota (site of the NCAA Championships)."

Cal will look secure its second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship when the Golden Bears kickoff the third and final round of the 54-hole Regional Saturday at 7 a.m. the Top 9 teams and two individuals - not among the qualifying teams - advance to the NCAA final, which is set for June 2-5 in Chaska, Minn., at the Hazeltine National Golf Club.
