BERKELEY, Calif. - The California women's basketball team added Brio Rode, New Mexico's 2002 Gatorade Player of the Year, to its 2004-05 roster, head coach Caren Horstmeyer announced Tuesday.
"Rode is a confident player who brings out the best in her teammates," said Horstmeyer. "She's an excellent floor leader and has great range on her shot."
Rode, a 5-10 shooting guard who can also play the point, broke Rio Rancho High School's scoring record (1,403 points) and ranks No. 1 or No. 2 in every major career statistical category in school history. She has been starting on the school's varsity team since the eighth grade and has NBA-range three-point ability.
As a junior last season, the Albuquerque product averaged 19.6 points and 5.0 assists per game. As a sophomore, she was named the Gatorade New Mexico Player of the Year and an honorable mention Street & Smith All-American when she averaged 14.8 points and 4.3 assists per game.
Rode joins Jessica Lawson, Krista Foster and Kelly O'Connell as freshmen on the 2004-05 Cal team.
