BERKELEY-- - After a world record swim in the short course 100-meter butterfly (56.34) yesterday, junior Natalie Coughlin responded with two more world records in the 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter Individual Medley events in the second day of competition at the FINA World Cup held in East Meadow, N.Y.

Coughlin shattered the world record she set in last year's FINA World Cup in the 100m back with a time of 56.71 (previous world record time-57.08), and smashed the 100m IM record with a time of 58.80. The previous world record for the 100m IM was 59.30 set by Jenny Thompson on Apr. 2, 1999. Coughlin now holds five overall world records and both of the world records set tonight also stand as the best American and U.S. Open marks.

"Natalie's swims were both inspiring and amazing and this was a great meet for the Cal team to compete against some of the best swimmers in the world," assistant coach Adam Crossen said. "All of the girls swam good races and represented Cal well. Natalie proved she is a great swimming ambassador for both the U.S. and University of California."

Coughlin earned both the Swimmer of the Meet and Performance of the Meet honors.

Other impressive swims by Golden Bears included former Cal standout, Haley Cope's runner-up finish in the 100m back (1:00.05), while freshman Helen Silver finished seventh in the event at 1:02.43. Cope also placed eighth in the 100m IM (1:03.17).

Junior Natalie Griffith finished fifth in the 400m IM (4:52.08) and eighth in the 200m fly (2:20.13), while freshman Ashley Chandler placed sixth in the 400m IM (5:01.11) and eighth 400m free (4:20.02).
