BERKELEY - Donothan Bailey, Kyle Bunthuwong, Bryan del Castillo and Glen Ishino are ending their summer with the biggest gymnastics event of the year - the Visa Championships. The four Golden Bears will compete in Saint Paul, Minn., on Aug. 17 and 19 for a chance to be named to the U.S. senior national team.
"So far, training has been going well," Bunthuwong said. "We've solidified the skills in our routine and are continuing to clean up them as much as possible. Almost every day has been a routine day so far, give or a take a day to let our body rest."
"Every day, we are doing something that is preparing us for Visas. With my training, I am feeling more confident with my routines, and I feel that my body is becoming stronger and healthier since the Visa Qualifiers, which is pretty much what I wanted leading up to Visas."
Bunthuwong and Ishino were last in action at the Visa Qualifiers on July 9. At the qualifiers, Bunthuwong finished fifth in the all-around and was tops on parallel bars.
"Training has been pretty tough lately," Ishino said. "But my overall workouts have been improving. It's going to be a race to see if I can recover the lost endurance in the next two weeks."
Del Castillo and Bunthuwong closed out their eligibility this past spring while Bailey will be a junior this fall and Ishino a senior.
"I can say for the other guys that training is coming along as well, but their injuries they've sustained earlier this year have restricted a lot of their training," Bunthuwong said. "But I know these guys are willing to push through, and put everything out there once Visas comes around."
