BERKELEY - Sixteenth-ranked California lost to San Diego State, 2-0, in a Pac-10 match on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Despite outshooting the Aztecs, 18-8, the Golden Bears could not score past senior goalkeeper Tally Hall, who made 11 saves. Cal, which upset No. 9 UCLA, 3-1, in its Pac-10 opener last Friday, saw its record fall to 6-3-1 (1-1-0 Pac-10). San Diego State improved to 5-3-1 (1-1-0).

"San Diego State is an excellent team, and certainly showed it today by bouncing back from their Friday game in beating us 2-0," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "I give them the credit."

Cal produced three shots on goal with its first three shots, but Hall saved all three. Conversely, the Aztecs couldn't generate much of an attack in the run of play, but they did earn a free kick in the 13th minute about 25 yards from goal. San Diego State junior midfielder Kraig Chiles sent a swerving ball into the Cal box, and Aztecs freshman defender Nick Cardenas rose above the Cal defense to head the ball past Cal goalkeeper Stefan Frei for a 1-0 San Diego State lead.

The Bears outshot the Aztecs, 7-3, in the first half.

Chiles and the Aztecs came out strong in the second half. Aztecs midfielder Freddy McDonald had a good chance in the 53rd minute, forging into the Cal box and lashing a shot from about 15 yards that was wide of the far post.

Cal, which outshot San Diego State, 11-5, in the second stanza, had its chances for the equalizer.

Senior midfielder Nick Natzke missed on a 20-yard drive in the 65th minute that flew inches over the Aztecs goal. Junior teammate Andrew Jacobson had a shot deflected out for a Cal corner kick five minutes later.

In the last 30 seconds of the game, Aztecs senior midfielder Andrew DiCicco had a 1-v-1 with substitute Cal goalkeeper Mike Oseguera, who deflected DiCicco's ensuing shot. But sophomore forward Omar Persad pounced on the ball and scored from close range to clinch the victory, 2-0, for San Diego State.

Cal hosts Pac-10 rival Stanford at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Edwards Stadium.
