A LOOK AT THE GOLDEN BEARS
California (8-11, 4-5 Pac-10, 6th) enters the second half of the Pac-10 schedule this week at home against Oregon State (11-8, 3-6 Pac-10, T7th) Thursday and No. 23 Oregon (12-7, 5-4 Pac-10, 5th) Saturday.
The Golden Bears are on a roll, winners of three of their last four and four of their last six games. They are coming off their first ever road sweep of USC (61-55) and UCLA (58-57) and are in search of their first three-game Pac-10 winning streak since the 1991-92 campaign. The Bears are close to being undefeated over the last six contests if it wasn't for a seven-point loss to Stanford and a one-point defeat to Washington in the final two minutes of both games.
After entering the LA trip with a 3-5 record this year in games decided by eight points or less, Cal evened that mark at 5-5 with two close wins in LA.
Cal continues to be one of the best defensive teams in the Pac-10, ranking fourth in both scoring defense at 65.1 ppg and steals at 9.42 pg. The Bears are 5-2 this year in games in which they have held their opponent under 60 points.
Senior guard Courtney Johnson has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games. The Antioch native leads Cal with 12.8 ppg (9th Pac-10), followed by senior guard Kenya Corley at 12.3 ppg (14th Pac-10) and junior center Ami Forney at 10.6 ppg (18th Pac-10).
Forney stands third in the league in rebounding at 7.6 rpg and second for offensive boards at 3.11. She has four double-doubles this year to lead the Bears.
After beginning the year in sixth place on Cal's all-time steals chart with 197, Johnson (251) moved into second all-time at Cal with three steals against UCLA.. She surpassed Cynthia Cooke (1982-85) who was second at 250. Mazetta Garrett (1979-84) is Cal's all-time leader with 295.
Johnson also is closing in on becoming the 16th player in Cal history to record 1000 points. She has 896 with nine games to go in the regular season.
Johnson is slated to do an online chat Wed., Feb. 7 at 11:00 a.m., at www.pac-10.org, which also can be accessed from www.calbears.com.
