FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - California sophomore Jernej Godec won the 100-yard butterfly in a personal record time of 46.32 during the Friday morning preliminaries on the third day of the Pac-10 Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center. Third-ranked Cal, which is in second place at the conference meet, qualified a total of 14 Golden Bears for tonight's A finals.
Godec, who swam for his native Slovenia in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, also became the third-fastest Bear in program history with his time in the 100 fly. He was also fifth in the 100 backstroke prelim. In the 100 fly, senior teammate Milorad Cavic was third, in 46.62, and junior teammate Patrick O'Neil swam a PR 47.45 to take seventh in the 100 fly prelim.
Cal senior Henrique Barbosa took second in the 100 breaststroke prelim, swimming an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 53.93, which is Cal's fastest time of the season in the event. Junior teammate Graham Lentz was fourth in the race in a time of 54.16. Stanford's Paul Kornfeld won the prelim in a time of 53.32.
Three Bears qualified for the A final in the 200 freestyle by reaching the top eight of the prelim: Sophomore Dominik Meichtry was second (1:35.02, NCAA A), sophomore Garrett Wagner was fifth (1:35.71, NCAA B) and junior Daniel Lysaught was eighth (1:37.27, NCAA B). Stanford's Andy Grant won the 200 free in 1:34.86.
Cal freshman David Russell finished second in the 100 backstroke (47.25, NCAA A) to Stanford's Hongzhe Sun (46.86).
In the 400 individual medley prelim, Bears sophomore Louis Vayo was fifth (3:51.40, NCAA B) and senior teammate Miguel Molina was seventh (3:52.02, NCAA B). Stanford's Mark Stephens won the event in 3:47.99.
At 6 p.m., the conference championships will feature the finals of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 back and 400-medley relay. The Pac-10 Championships continue through Saturday.
