SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 6 California women's water polo team defeated No. 13 Long Beach State, 10-7, in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Thursday Afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif. The Golden Bears are the tournament's No. 7 seed while the 49ers are the tournament's No. 10 seed. With the victory Cal improves to 17-9, while Long Beach State falls to 15-16.
The game was a see-saw affair throughout the first half, which featured four ties and three lead changes. With 2:51 remaining in the second quarter, California went up for good on a 6-on-5 opportunity, taking a 5-4 advantage into intermission.
The Bears clamped down in the third period, keeping the 49ers off the scoreboard, while notching three goals of their own. Long Beach State broke the drought with a goal at the 3:53 mark of the fourth period and added another strike two minutes later to pull within two goals, 8-6. However, California's goal with 29 seconds left in the game effectively put the game out of reach.
Seven players scored for the Bears, led by Grace Reynolds' hat trick. Meanwhile, Cecilia Canetti, Lauren Sieprath and Dayna Wawrzynski had two tallies apiece for the 49ers.
Cal next plays No. 2 Stanford on Friday at 12:40 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in San Diego.
