DAVIS, CALIF. - Led by junior All-American John Mann's five goals, the No. 2-ranked Cal men's water polo team (15-3) defeated host UC Davis, 15-7, Sunday at Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif.
Cal got on the scoreboard during their first possession with a goal from junior Andrija Vasiljevic. A couple minutes later Brian Bacharach, brother of Aggie Kevin Bacharach, was able to score on a man-up situation giving Cal a 2-0 lead. Senior Tom Jay sent a hard shot flying towards the Bear's goal with 2:56 on the clock and put the Aggies on the board, cutting the Cal lead to one-point. The Bears fired back with goals from junior Brian Kinsel and John Mann to finish out the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.
Mann scored his second goal of the game early in the second, but on the following possession freshman Danny Driscoll shot and scored the Aggies' second goal. Mann sandwiched Driscoll's goal with his third goal of the day bringing the Bear's lead to 6-2.
Cal's goalie Nate Bennett, brother of Adam Bennett, managed to block two Aggie four-meter penalty shots in the second quarter while Vasiljevic added two goals to the Cal total giving him a hat trick for the day. Tom Kurth, brother of Aggie Jeffrey Kurth, also added a goal in the second bringing the score to 9-2 leading into halftime.
Senior Patrick Jacobson was able to break away from his defender and convert a counter attack goal with 4:27 on the clock in the third period. Junior Josh McNeely followed suit, scoring off of a pass from sophomore Matt MacLachlan to cut the Cal lead to 9-4.
Kinsel added his second goal for the Bears shortly following McNeely's point with a shot out of the two-meter position. Brian Bacharach then scored his second goal on a penalty shot. With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, the Cal goalie left the cage in an attempt to steal the ball and junior David Welch was able to toss the ball into the open cage scoring the fifth Aggie goal.
Within a minute of each other, early in the fourth, Mann was able to score two more goals for Cal bringing his game total to four. Jacobson added his second goal of the game during a man-up situation with 4:51 left to play, which was shortly followed by Driscoll's second goal of the game. Sophomore Mike Hayes and freshman Trent Calder rounded out the Bears' scoring with a goal apiece in the fourth quarter. The final score had Cal ahead of UC Davis, 15-7.
Cal will next host Pacific, Thursday, Oct .27 at 7 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex, and Pepperdine on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics. Both matches are MPSF contests.
