LOS ANGELES -
California Head Coach Mike Montgomery:
"We made some big mistakes down the stretch with free throws and we are lucky that it didn't cost us. Those misses really gave me some gray hair. The foul call down the stretch really turned into a big play for us as well. Donte Smith came out and knocked down some big shots for them and really led the team back. We should have taken better care of the ball in the end of the game and killed the clock. As you can see, our foul shooting just isn't going to cut it."
On the USC defense:
"They are a really solid team defensively. They felt like they had to take Marcus Simmons out of the game in the zone because we weren't guarding him. Simmons is a tremendous defender so when he came out that really opened up another avenue for us. "
On the big men:
"I thought our big guys did a nice job down low tonight, especially going up against Stepheson and Vucevic who are solid players. USC is a solid team up and down and they always put up a tough fight. Getting a win here in this building is big for us. We are happy to pull it out after some of the mistakes we made."
On free throws:
"The game really came down to it because of free throws and it didn't have to be that way. It could have been a much different situation had we made out shots. Free throws are something we will be working on after this.."
