BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. - The Cal baseball team, paced by the strong pitching of freshman left-hander Justin Jones and two hits apiece by junior second baseman Brian Guinn, sophomore left fielder Danny Oh, freshman right fielder Jimmy Bosco, sophomore shortstop Marcus Semien and freshman center field Darrel Matthews; topped Saint Mary's, 5-4, Saturday (Feb. 27) during the second day of the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament. The Golden Bears improved to 5-1 on the year.

Jones was stellar in his second collegiate game, throwing 7.0 innings with two hits, two earned runs, three walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts against the Gaels. Jones had a nine-strikeout contest Feb. 20 against Southern Utah.

Senior right-hander Daniel Wolford earned his first save of the season against Saint Mary's by pitching the eighth inning (one hit, one strikeout). The game was called after eight innings due to tournament time rules.

Cal had jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Bears notched an unearned in the first inning on a failed pick off attempt by Gaels' starter Kyle Barraclough (1-1, eight hits, three earned runs, five walks, five strikeouts). Cal then exploded for three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by sophomore left fielder Danny Oh and a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Mark Canha.

Saint Mary's came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Patrick Wisdom and had two unearned runs in the seventh inning until Wolford secured the win for the Bears in the eighth.
