BERKELEY - The Cal men's basketball team, which returns four starters from a 20-11 season last year, is ranked tied for 25th in Street & Smith's preseason poll.

Duke is the favorite to repeat as national champion, followed by Kentucky, Florida, Maryland and Illinois.

The Bears are tied for the 25th slot with Stanford. UCLA, at No. 6, is the only other Pac-10 team ranked.

Cal's schedule features two non-conference opponents who are in the poll - No. 10 St. Joseph's, a possible second-round foe in the BCA Classic Nov. 15-16 in Berkeley, and No. 21 Fresno State, which comes to Haas Pavilion Dec. 11.

Cal starts preparations for the 2001-02 season with Midnite Madness this Friday, Oct. 12. Doors to Haas open at 10:30 p.m. and fans will be treated to plenty of entertainment and contests leading up to 12:01 a.m. when the Bears will take to the court for the first time.

Cal's first exhibition game is Nov. 5, and the Bears start the season officially vs. Princeton Nov. 15.

Last year, Cal earned its third consecutive trip to the postseason with an invitation to the NCAA Tournament and won 20 games for the third time in the last five seasons.
