For the second time in as many weeks, the No. 9 California men's gymnastics team (1-5) is competing at Stanford against the No. 4 Cardinal (5-1). Saturday's dual meet begins at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
"We're not so concerned with our scores more than we're concerned with hitting our routines and being happy with our results," said California assistant head coach Colin Christ. "Last week we worked really hard in the gym, had a great meet at Stanford and learned that we are capable of competing together as a team. We definitely have room for improvement but the whole team learned that we can hang with the top teams."
This is the second time in less than a week that the Golden Bears have traveled to Palo Alto. Last Sunday in Maples Pavilion, Cal notched a season-best 426.450 but lost to Stanford's 435.350. Several Golden Bears set new career-best scores, including freshman Takahiro Kawada, who claimed the top pommel title of the night with a 14.50, and fellow freshman Ryan Patterson, who placed third on vault with a 14.950. Freshman Kevin Wolting also had a successful night, finishing second on pommel (14.350), second on floor (15.40) and sharing third on vault with Patterson.
"Our goal is to go out there and represent the university well, and we're seeing guys that look more proud to be wearing that Cal uniform on their chests," Christ said.
This is the fourth meeting between the Bay Area teams. Cal and Stanford will meet again at least two more times, once at a quad meet in Stanford on March 2 and at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on April 6.
