BERKELEY - Current Cal golfer Michael Weaver and 2012-13 freshman James Yoon have recently posted notable accomplishments, with Weaver the only amateur to qualify for the TPC Stonebrae Championship on the Nationwide Tour and Yoon recording his first AJGA victory.
Weaver, who is redshirting the 2011-12 collegiate season to gain admission to Cal's Haas School of Business and work on his golf game, was one of seven qualifiers from a qualifying event played Monday at the Diablo Creek Golf Course in Concord. Weaver shot a four-under par 67 that put him in a tie with four others for the final two qualifying spots and then advanced during a playoff.
The TPC Stonebrae Championship runs this Thursday-Sunday, April 12-15, at the par-71, 7,100-yard TPC Stonebrae course in Hayward. Weaver will begin the tournament with a first-round tee time of 9 a.m. on Thursday. Fans can follow Weaver in the TPC Stonebrae Championship by visiting nationwidetour.com.
The first AJGA win for Yoon (72-71-71 - 214, +1) came Sunday at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrooke hosted by Sean O'Hair. He sunk a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole of his third and final round to secure a two-shot victory. Yoon moved up nine spots to No. 10 in the latest Polo junior rankings after the victory.
