Berkeley - Former Cal women's swimmer Micha Burden will represent the United States at the 2008 FINA Open Water World Championships in Seville, Spain next April thanks to a first place finish in the women's 10K at the U.S. Open Water World Championships Trials last Saturday (Oct. 20).

Burden, who won with a time of 2:00.47, competed for the Golden Bears from 2002-04. The top 10 finishers in Seville are assured of a trip to Beijing, where open water swimming will make its debut as an Olympic sport.

"You run into each other a lot in open water," Burden told USA Swimming. "You have to be prepared to get a little physical if need be. This has been my dream since I was a little girl. I am kind of in shock. This is what I have been working for my whole life."
