BERKELEY - The 14th-ranked Cal softball team pounded out 10 hits, including four for extra bases, on its way to a 9-1 victory over No. 12 Oregon in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday on Levine-Fricke Field. In the second game, the Ducks came back to win, 7-0.
Cal is now 31-10 on the year and 2-5 in the Pac-10, while Oregon is 30-11 and 5-3.
In the first game, the Bears jumped on Oregon starter Jennifer Cook for four runs in the first inning, all coming with two outs. Second baseman Lisa Iancin started the rally with a double. Catcher Megumi Takasaki then singled her home for Cal's first run. Two singles and a double later, Cal had batted around and was up, 4-0.
In the second inning, the Bears batted around again, this time getting four runs on three hits and an Oregon error. Cal clinched the game in the fifth inning when center fielder Amber Phillips led off with a double and scored on a pair of Duck throwing errors.
Freshman pitcher Jocelyn Forest scattered five hits and struck out three to improve to 14-3 on the year.
The second game was played in a steady rain and was finally called after five innings. The Ducks scored seven runs in the first three innings, capitalizing on three Cal errors. Oregon pitcher Connie McMurren tossed a two-hitter for her ninth victory of the season.
Cal returns to action Sunday when the Bears host No. 13 Oregon State at 1 p.m.
