STANFORD, Calif. - Coming off a victory at the Oregon State Invitational last week, California fired a 293 to stand tied for third with Washington Friday after the opening round of the Stanford Invitational.
Vanderbilt has the early lead after carding a 280, which puts the Commodores four shots ahead of Tulsa. UCLA, USC and Arizona State are right on Cal's tail in a tie for fifth with a 294.
Arizona State's Jimin Kang leads the individual race after firing a seven-under-par 65 at the 6154-yard Stanford Golf Course. Stacy Prammanasudh of Tulsa and Nicki Cutler of Vanderbilt are tied for second with scores of 67.
Also in the top 20 for Cal is sophomore Sarah Huarte, who carded a 73 to tie for 19th.
The second of three rounds of the 17-team tournament begins Saturday at 8 a.m.
