TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Junior Deborah Maier earned All-America honors with a 30th-place finish and the Cal men's team placed 31st at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday run on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.

"A tough day for the Golden Bears today," head coach Tony Sandoval assessed. "Getting here certainly took its toll on us physically. We weren't 100 percent, but I know everyone was focused to race their best. Nevertheless, we had an outstanding season, especially at Pac-10s and regionals."

Maier competed as an individual - Cal's first such runner in seven years - and recorded the highest finish by a Cal runner since Sabrina Han was 21st in 1990. She is also first Golden Bear woman to claim All-America notice since Elissa Riedy in 1998. Maier covered the 6000-meter course in 20:43.7.

Maier earned her spot in the field by virtue of her runner-up finish at NCAA West Regionals -the highest for a Cal woman ever at the NCAA regional race. She was also third at the Pac-10 Championships in late October.

Deborah ran a solid race and added another All-American certificate," said Sandoval, noting that Maier also earned All-America honors in the 5000 meters on the track last spring. "We have a solid core of returnees for next year."

The Cal men entered the NCAA race after a strong regional meet in which they placed third, earning their third trip to the national championships in the last four years. However, they struggled on Monday, finishing 31st of 31 team. Senior Michael Coe paced the Bears by taking 76th in 31:05 in the 10,000-meter race, followed by senior Kari Karlsson in 94th (31:19) and sophomore Collin Jarvis in 130th (31:42). Cody Smith (187th, 32:36) and Maxime Chevee (191st, 32:52) rounded out Cal's scorers, while Simon Schmidt (195th, 32:57) and Steve Sodaro (206th, 33:35) completed the Bear roster.

Oklahoma State won the men's team title with 73 points, Florida State was second (193) and Wisconsin third (223).
