No. 3 Cal Wins Four of Its Six Heats On First Day of IRA Championships

CAMDEN, N.J. - The No. 3 California men's crew advanced all of its boats Thursday morning to Friday's semifinals and repechages of the IRA Championships on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

The Bears' varsity eight won the second heat in a time of 5:36.833, while No. 5 Washington was second at 5:38.988 and No. 16 Navy was third at 5:40.837. No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Harvard and Mo. 11 Cornell won their heats as well.

The Cal second varsity eight defeated Cornell by just over one second. Harvard (5:46.600), Brown (5:46.766) and Wisconsin (5:47.806) won their respective heats, bypassing tomorrow's repechages.

The Bears' freshman eight claimed the second heat in a time of 5:49.633. Washington (5:48.506), Brown (5:48.156) and Harvard (5:48.247) also won their heats to advance to the semifinals.

The Cal freshman four took the second heat with a time of 6:34.056, the fastest time between the four heats. Yale (6:37.503), Boston University (6:37.655) and MIT (6:41.327) all won their heats.

The Bears open four (6:37.914) finished seven seconds behind Princeton and three seconds behind Washington. Cal's varsity pair finished in fourth place, nearly 20 seconds behind Yale in their opening heat.

Tomorrow will feature six races with Cal boats in them. The Bears' varsity pair will race in the first repechage. Cal's open four will race in the third repechage. The Cal freshman four will race in the second semifinal. Cal's freshman eight will race in the second semifinal. The Bears' varsity eight will race in the second semifinal. The Cal second varsity eight will race in a semifinal. Racing will begin on Friday at 7:00 a.m. EST and culminate at 3:24 p.m. EST.
