BERKELEY - Three California football players have been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII team. Offensive tackle Chris Murphy and defensive back Mike McGrath are on the first team, while Tyler Fredrickson made the second team as a punter.

Murphy, a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic choice, was a second team All-District selection last year. The 6-6 senior from Hanford, Calif., owns a 3.51 GPA in political science.

McGrath, who has a 3.40 GPA in mechanical engineering, plays safety on the Bears' defense, as well as on all special teams. The junior was an honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic pick in 2002, in addition to earning second team All-Pac-10 honors a year ago.

Fredrickson, a senior, received his bachelor's degree in film last year, finishing with a 3.44 GPA, and he is competing this fall as a graduate student in Cal's School of Education.

The all-district team was voted on by sports information directors from within the District VIII states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and the province of British Columbia. Both Murphy and McGrath qualify for the national Academic All-America ballot, with voting results announced in early December.
