Moraga, CA - Bears sophomore Jieun Jacobs dominated the singles field at the 4th annual ITA Invitational, hosted this past weekend at St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA.
Jacobs, who also teamed with Courtney Jantz of Fresno State, also made it to the final match in the doubles event.
Also participating for Cal in the weekend tournament were sophomore Kristen Case and freshman Rio Del Rosario, who paired together in doubles and also competed in the singles events.
Jacobs, who was seeded fifth in the tournament, sailed through the draw of 64 to reach the finals, winning all of her matches in straight sets, seeing her toughest competition in the quarterfinals against Gabriella Lundquist of Sacramento State. The two played the second set until Jacobs ultimately won, 7-6.
Advancing to the final match, Jacobs faced Susanne Bertel of Pacific, who had also faced little competition, not allowing more than three losses in any set. After dropping the first set, Jacobs rallied to defeat Bertel by a final mark of 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Jacobs and Jantz, seeded third, and fought their way through the field in several close matches before ultimately being defeated by the top seeded duo of Lucia Tallo and Chantel Wiggins from Fresno State.
Case made it to the round of sixteen in the singles draw, defeating the higher-seeded Ewa Grusjecka of Fresno State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, before being eliminated by Santa Clara's Janelle Kaloi in a pair of 6-3 sets. Kaloi was seeded sixth in the draw. Del Rosario, competing in her first intercollegiate tournament, lost in the opening round, but made it as far as the second round, before she was eliminated by a 6-3, 6-3 count. Case and Del Rosario won one match in the doubles field together, but lost in the second round by an 8-3 mark, to the second seeded team from Sacramento State.
