Bears Tied for Seventh After Round One at Pac-10 Championship

SEATTLE - Senior Dan Arroyo (Walnut Creek) was the lone Golden Bear able to break par during Monday's opening round of the Pacific-10 Conference Men's Golf Championship, as the rest of the 24th-ranked California men's golf team struggled with the unfamiliar surroundings at the Broadmoor Country Club (par 70, 6186 yards), finishing round one tied for seventh at 19-over 369. Defending champion Arizona State once again sits atop the leader board at after a combined 2-under 348 team effort, followed by Oregon (1-over 351) and UCLA and Washington (4-over 354) in second and third, respectively.

Arroyo, the 1998 Pac-10 Individual Runner-Up, showed no ill effects from a hand injury that had kept the All-American on the shelf for the Bears last two tournaments, finishing the opening round tied for fifth at 1-under 69. ASU's Paul Casey, who shot a 3-under 67, is the individual leader.

Han Lee (Cerritos) was Cal's next best finisher, tied for 26th at 3-over 73, while Dan Coyle (Dundalk, Ire.), Jay Berkowitz (Weaverville), Robert Hamilton (Sacramento) and Dong Yi (Alameda) all finished well back in the pack.

The Bears, who have shown a penchant for late round comebacks this season, will get a chance to improve their standing during the final three rounds of play.
