AUBURN, Wash. - No. 16 California is tied for fourth after shooting a 298 Tuesday in the opening round of the NCAA Championships at Washington National Golf Course. The Golden Bears, which are making their second-straight appearance at nationals, are 13 strokes behind No. 7 Arizona. The Wildcats shot a torrid minus-three 285 to hold a nine-shot lead over No. 2 Duke and defending champion and 10th-ranked Georgia (294).

Last year, Cal placed 19th in its first appearance in program history at the NCAA Championships in Florida.

No. 1 Auburn, No. 11 Florida, No. 20 Wake Forest and No. 22 South Carolina are all tied with Cal. Four team are tied for ninth at 299 in the 24-team championship.

Sophomore Sarah Huarte, who was competing in Cal's No. 1 spot, leads the Bears in a tie for 14th. She opened at minus one on the back nine and ended up with an even-par 72 after a bogie on the sixth hole. Her 16 pars tied for the first day lead.

Junior Vikki Laing was Cal's next best golfer, tying for 30th with a 74. Junior Ria Quiazon and sophomore Claire Dury are tied for 55th with scores of 76. Dury paced the Bears with three birdies but a triple bogie on the 13th hole negated the birdies. Senior Anne Walker is tied for 94th with a 79.

Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn fired a four-under 68 to lead the individual race by one stroke over Georgia's Summer Simons.

The Bears begin the second round with an 8 a.m. tee time Wednesday from the first tee.
