The California Golden Bears women's golf team plays their third tournament in a row, this time much closer to home, when they travel south to San Jose to play in the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Country Club in San Jose Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 2-3. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes, two rounds of 18, on Monday on the par-72, 6,210 yard course followed by the final round of 18 on Tuesday. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
The Bears will be one of 16 teams in the field for the tournament hosted by San Jose State. The other teams include Boise State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Georgia State, Hawaii, Miami, Oregon, San Diego State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford, and Washington.
California is the top-ranked team in the field, coming in at No. 18 in last week's Golf Week national rankings. Stanford is right on Cal's heels at No. 20, with UC Irvine at No. 21, San Jose State at No. 25 and Oregon at No. 26.
Stanford, Oregon, Washington and Cal teed off against one another Oct. 6-8 at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash. Stanford came out ahead, winning the tournament with a 905. Oregon slipped past Washington by a stroke, with a 921. Cal posted a 927 for a fourth place finish. Cal finished 16 strokes ahead of Stanford at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Feb. 11 and 16 strokes ahead of Washington last week at the Wildcat Invitational in Sonora, Mexico.
Sophomore Pia Halbig, who was the individual leader after the first two rounds of the Wildcat Invitational, is the top-ranked golfer for the Bears, being rated at No. 54 in the Feb. 22 Golf Week rankings. Senior Shannon Yocum ranks at No. 74 and Senior Allison Goodman at No. 83.
This will be the last tournament in a flurry of events to start the spring season for the Bears. The next event for Cal will not be until April 3-5 when they play in the PING/ASU Invitational in Phoenix.
