Box Score

IRVINE, CALIF. - The Cal baseball team got behind early, giving up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, and could not recover, losing 9-1 Sunday (Feb. 24) to No. 25 UC Irvine (6-1) in the final game of a four-game series at Anteater Ballpark. The Golden Bears (4-4) got their lone run in the seventh inning on junior catcher Alex Egber's RBI single.

Cal finished 1-3 in the four-game road series, losing 5-3 Friday night and splitting a doubleheader Saturday (won 8-6 and lost 4-3 in 10 innings) before suffering the loss in Sunday's final.

The Bears' starter, junior left-hander Michael Theofanopoulos, struggled only getting one out in the bottom of the first inning while giving up two hits, five runs with three walks. Sophomore right-hander Keaton Siomkin also struggled in the first inning, getting one out and yielding three hits and two runs.

Finally Cal right-handers Dylan Nelson and Ryan Wertenberger were able to settle things down, striking out five Anteaters in the next 3.1 innings.

Offensively, the Bears finished with seven singles from seven different players. Cal scored its run in the seventh inning when, with one out, freshman third baseman Max Dutto had a single to right field. Sophomore second baseman Brenden Farney then walked, and both Dutto and Farney advanced a base on an Anteater wild pitch. Finally, Egber, got his first hit as a Bear with a run-scoring single up the middle.

The Bears next travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros. Cal takes on Baylor on Friday, March 1 at 12 p.m. Central Time; North Carolina on Saturday, March 2 at 12 p.m. Central Time and Houston, Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m. Central Time. The Bears will then face Rice on Monday, March 4 at 3 p.m. Central Time at Reckling Park.

Reckling Park is the site of Cal's remarkable capturing of the 2011 NCAA Houston Regional. In that regional, the Bears lost their opening game, 6-4, to Baylor, before winning four straight games, including defeating Rice (6-3) and Baylor twice (8-0, 9-8) to advance to the NCAA Super Regional hosted by Cal at Santa Clara's Schott Stadium. The Bears defeated Dallas Baptist twice (7-0, 6-2) in Santa Clara to advance to the 2011 College World Series, where they fell to Virginia (4-1), defeated Texas A&M (7-3) and finally lost again to Virginia (8-1) to end their stellar season.
