BERKELEY - Former California women's basketball player Sophie Von Saldern was selected the first pick in the fourth round of Tuesday's WNBA draft by the Cleveland Rockers. She was the 49th pick overall.

Von Saldern, a 6-2 forward, played for the Golden Bears during the 1992-93 season before having to return home to her native Germany for personal reasons. During her one-year stint in Berkeley, Von Saldern played in all 29 games, averaging 6.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. She holds the school record for best field goal percentage in a season at 62.4 percent (78-for-125).

Since leaving the collegiate game, Von Saldern has played for the German national team, including on the bronze medal 1997 European Championship team and the 1998 World Championship team. The 27-year old also has played professionally in Germany and Australia.
