STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 5 California women's water polo team took its second road victory of the year with a win over Pacific, 14-3, Wednesday evening at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. Eight different Golden Bears scored and senior goalie Heather Stuart had to make just five saves to earn the victory. Cal improves to 2-0 on the young season while the Tigers drop to 0-1.
The Tigers struck first, 1:16 into the game with a goal from senior Kellie Fletcher. California quickly responded and proceeded to score 13 of the following 14 goals. After outscoring the Tigers by two in the opening period, the Golden Bears took a 3-1 lead after eight minutes of play.
Cal came together on offense during the second quarter to post four goals to Pacific's one. After the first period, senior goalie Heather Stuart and the defense allowed just one more second-half goal, and the Bears went into the halftime break with 7-2 lead.
California put forth a well-rounded third quarter, scoring three goals of its own and shutting out Pacific. The Golden Bears closed the door on the Tigers in the final period with four goals to Pacific's one, bringing the score to 14-3.
Stuart grabbed five saves in goal for the Bears. Senior defender Molly Hayes and sophomore two-meter Grace Reynolds each tallied team-high three goals for the Bears while sophomore utilities Julie Oreglia and Darby Anderson contributed two. Sophomore defenders Erin Scully, Remy Champion, Meghan Corso and senior Katya Eadington each scored one goal.
The Golden Bears return home Saturday to host No. 7 San Jose State and Sonoma State on Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
