Cal men's crew held their annual team banquet last night at the university Faculty Club. The team banquet is held to honor the oarsmen on the team who performed at the highest level academically, and physically. Four awards are handed out on the evening to the most deserving candidates from the varsity, second varsity and freshman boats. The awards include the Russ Nagler Award (given to the most promising freshman), the scholarship award (award for highest GPA), the George Ahlgren Award (most improved oarsmen) and the Dean Witter Award (loyalty, proficiency, and spirit award).
Also included on the night, were speeches from men's varsity coach Steve Gladstone, and freshman coach Geoff Bond. Both coaches gave speeches that fired the team up for the upcoming Pac-10 championships being held on May 16th in Rancho Cordova. Professor Jack Citrin directed his speech towards the student athletes, urging them to take on academics with the same passion and intensity as they do rowing. Finally, former Cal oarsmen Ken Cusick ('51) was on hand, representing the Big C Society, to award the first year varsity letter certificates.
