NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The No. 5 Golden Bears defeated No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, 7-2, Saturday in the first round of the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational and then upset No. 4 Hawaii in overtime, 11-9, in the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
Against the Gauchos, the Golden Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the first quarter. The Cal defense shut out Santa Barbara entirely in the first half and helped the Bears take the 4-0 lead into the halftime break. UCSB finally got on the board with one goal in the third period but it was not enough with Cal outscoring them in the period, 2-1. Each team tacked on one goal in the final period but Cal's early lead gave the Bears the win.
Sophomore utility Camille Hewko and sophomore two-meter Grace Reynolds each scored two goals for Cal and goalkeeper Heather Stuart had 11 saves for the Bears. With the win over USCB, California advanced to play No. 4 Hawaii in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m.
In the second game of the day, the Rainbow Wahine took an early lead -- 4-3 in the first quarter -- over the Golden Bears to begin the game. Cal responded in the second stanza with three goals to Hawaii's one to take a 6-5 advantage into halftime. The Bears posted three goals in the third period while the Rainbow Wahine had two, bringing the score to 9-7 at the end of three periods.
Hawaii scored two goals in the fourth period to send the match into overtime. In the overtime periods, Grace Reynolds and Paige Lorenz scored for Cal to give the Golden Bears the 11-9 win. It was Cal's first win over the Rainbow Wahine this season after a heartbreaking 7-6 loss at home to Hawaii on Feb. 7.
California advances to the semifinals and will play UCLA at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
